Viet Nam is changing its agricultural approach from volume-driven production to high-quality, low-emission and green-growth farming, with a focus on shared benefits for farmers and international cooperation.

The strategy was discussed at the 2026 World Food Day Conference in Ho Chi Minh City on October 15. The event was co-hosted by the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment and the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations.

The conference focused on implementing a national scheme for one million hectares of high-quality, low-emission specialised rice production linked with green growth in the Mekong Delta by 2030.

Nearly 200 delegates attended. Deputy Minister Nguyen Hoang Hiep said food security could no longer rely only on higher yields.

Shift to quality, innovation and international resources

The sector must improve quality, value and production efficiency, use resources efficiently, reduce environmental impacts and ensure sustainable livelihoods for farmers, Hiep said.

Until 2030, it must refine implementation mechanisms, adopt suitable technologies, improve emission measurement and mobilise resources. Delegates discussed state funding, development assistance, private investment and green climate finance.

Australia confirmed support for a climate-resilient and sustainable rice value-chain project in the Mekong Delta. The TRVC project has applied Process 4043 across approximately 240,000 hectares.

Farmers must share the benefits rather than bear all technical costs and market risks alone, Hiep said.

Women’s participation in agrifood transformation

FAO representative Dr Vinod Ahuja highlighted the role of women in agriculture. The conference honoured 10 women for contributions to agriculture, agrifood systems and rural development.
