Vietnam flight prices rise ahead of Tet 2027

Airfares on many routes from Ho Chi Minh City to central and northern Vietnam have risen since tickets for Tet 2027 went on sale. Travel companies advise passengers with fixed dates to book early.

Prices rise day by day

More than three months remain before Tet 2027, but the flight market is already active. Airlines began selling Tet tickets in late August, and fares on many busy routes have risen noticeably after about two months of sales.

A survey on October 26 found one-way economy fares from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi on February 3, 2027, at about VND3.2–3.8 million. Ho Chi Minh City–Da Nang fares ranged from VND2.2–5.7 million. A Vietjet ticket to Hanoi on February 4 cost about VND3.3 million, VND500,000 more than in late August. Vietravel Airlines and Sun PhuQuoc Airways quoted VND3.5–3.6 million, while Vietnam Airlines started at VND3.7 million.

Flights from Ho Chi Minh City to Vinh on February 1 were priced at about VND3.5 million with Vietjet and VND3.7 million with Vietnam Airlines. On the route to Thanh Hoa, Vietnam Airlines listed economy fares of about VND4.3 million and business fares of up to VND6.5 million. Prices on some routes have risen 10–20% since sales began.

Airlines add flights and millions of seats for Tet travel

For families living in Ho Chi Minh City who travel home to central or northern provinces, Tet travel is a major expense. At VND3.5 million per one-way ticket, a family of four would pay VND14 million just to travel home, before return fares, baggage and other costs. On February 3, a flight from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi cost almost VND4 million, while a return fare from Hanoi started at VND764,000.

Le Nhut Thien An of TransViet Travel said demand for early searches and bookings is increasing. The busiest routes before Tet are from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi, Vinh, Thanh Hoa, Hue and Da Nang, followed by return flights after the holiday. Fares on many routes have risen and low-price seats are becoming less available.

Buy now or wait for lower fares?

Vietnam Airlines Group announced nearly 3.7 million seats on domestic and international routes from January 22 to February 20, 2027, an 11% increase from the 2026 Tet peak. Capacity on Hanoi–Ho Chi Minh City is expected to rise 15.4%, Ho Chi Minh City–Da Nang 7%, and routes to Hai Phong, Thanh Hoa, Vinh and Hue 6–13%.

Vietjet put 3.1 million Tet tickets on sale, including about 2 million for domestic routes. At the start of sales, fares on some flights from Ho Chi Minh City started at VND890,000, while fares to Da Nang, Nha Trang and Buon Ma Thuot started at VND490,000, excluding taxes and fees. Increased capacity has not yet lowered fares on the busiest dates.

Passengers are advised to book early for more choice and lower costs

Pham Anh Vu of Viet Travel expects Tet airfares to remain high, especially on routes from Ho Chi Minh City to central and northern provinces. Extra flights may not lower prices on the busiest days.

Before Tet, passengers mainly travel from Ho Chi Minh City to central and northern areas; after the holiday, they return to major cities. Operating costs, aviation fuel, fleet availability and airport capacity also affect fares. Prices may rise another 10–20% as Tet approaches, especially for passengers who wait until December or the final days before the holiday.

Passengers who already know their departure and return dates are advised to book early. Late buyers have fewer low-fare options after the cheaper tiers sell out. Pham Anh Vu said a February 4 flight currently cost from VND3.2 million one way on Vietjet, about VND400,000 more than a month earlier. If demand continues to grow, fares could rise another 10–20%.

Fares on busy routes are likely to keep rising. Extra flights may ease prices at some times, but are unlikely to bring a broad decline on the days before Tet and after the holiday.
