On November 4, Vietnam's Ministry of Education and Training approved a university training standard for the group of teacher-education disciplines. The standard sets learning-outcome requirements so graduates of teacher-training universities can meet the demands of changes in schools and preschools.
One of the main requirements concerns foreign-language proficiency. Graduates of all teacher-education disciplines must reach at least level 3, equivalent to B1. Some training programs may set a higher threshold.
For foreign-language teaching disciplines, graduation will require knowledge of two languages. Students must reach at least level 5, equivalent to C1, in the main foreign language and level 3 in the additional language. They must also have intercultural communication competence.
To achieve this level of training, the Ministry of Education and Training requires programs to organize learning so that at least 3% of the study load is devoted to direct language study and practice with native speakers, including specialists, lecturers or teachers.
The standard requires professional knowledge to account for at least 50% of the program's total study load. Graduates must also gain professional skills aligned with the 2018 General Education Program.
Graduates in seven natural-science and technology disciplines, including mathematics, informatics, physics, chemistry, biology, technology and natural sciences, must be able to organize integrated STEM education activities in schools.
Students in 12 subject-teaching disciplines for lower and upper secondary schools must learn to design and organize experiential and career-guidance activities for school pupils. The same requirement for organizing experiential activities applies to preschool, primary and special education disciplines.
After graduation, students in 12 subject-teaching disciplines must be able not only to teach knowledge from textbooks but also to analyze, explain and develop the general education program in relation to their subject.
