Vietnam's Road Administration has asked road management units, several construction departments, the Vietnam Expressway Corporation (VEC), investors and project companies operating under build-operate-transfer contracts to urgently review and install systems showing safe distances between vehicles on expressways.

The measure follows conclusions reached by Standing Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Tuc at a meeting reviewing safe-distance rules for road users.

The signs and markings are intended to help drivers identify and maintain a safe distance, while also supporting inspections and the handling of violations.

Based on a list of locations provided by the Traffic Police Department, the Road Administration instructed expressway operators and managers to coordinate the review and installation work with traffic police on each route.

The expressways covered are Hai Phong - Mong Cai, Trung Luong - My Thuan, Hanoi - Hai Phong, Phap Van - Cau Gie, Dien Chau - Bai Vot, Ho Chi Minh City - Trung Luong and the My Thuan - Can Tho section.

The units must add markings to show distances between vehicles and install distance signs at 0, 50, 100, 150 and 200 metres. The markings and signs will help drivers estimate the distance to the vehicle ahead and adjust their speed while travelling on the expressway.

The Road Administration said the system must be designed around the actual operating conditions of each route section rather than applied mechanically.

It also said distance markings and signs should not be installed at locations with frequent congestion, steep gradients, curves or inadequate visibility.

In addition to new installations, the Road Administration ordered a review of all existing safe-distance signs and markings, with repairs or additions where necessary.

The Road Administration told the units to begin the work urgently, compile the results of the review and installation, and submit a report by October 31.
