The project is based on a 2023–2028 cooperation agreement for the Green Education, Green Sports programme, signed by the ministry and the fund on October 6, 2023.

Together Building a Green School is one part of the programme. The ministry's Department of Science, Technology and Information leads the project, while the fund supports implementation and links it with schools during 2024–2028.

From green education to behaviour change

The project targets 200 schools nationwide. Organisers aim to encourage environmentally friendly lifestyles through training and environmental activities, while developing a green-school model and assessment index.

The project uses the 7R model: reducing waste, reusing items, recycling especially plastic waste, refusing harmful plastic products, rethinking processes to cut emissions, repairing items and replacing single-use plastic with reusable products.

From groundwork to school implementation

In 2025, specialists surveyed 12 schools in six provinces and cities. They assessed infrastructure and demand for environmental education, then prepared a Green School assessment index and selection criteria for participating schools.

Three consultation workshops were held in Hanoi, Hai Phong and Ho Chi Minh City, with about 100 school managers, teachers and education specialists.

In 2026, the project moved to training and field work. The first sessions were held for about 60 lower-secondary schools in northern Vietnam. The post-training score rose by 36% in Ninh Binh and by 43.5% in Lang Son.

A nationwide green-school network

During the rest of 2026, organisers plan to complete training in central and southern Vietnam. The project is expected to reach 95 schools in 19 provinces and cities. In 2027, the network is planned to expand to 155 schools in 31 provinces and cities, with a final target of 200 schools.

In 2027–2028, results will be assessed using the Green School index. The findings will support school recognition, the collection of effective initiatives and the creation of a Green School Map.

Tran Nam Tu, deputy head of the ministry's Department of Science, Technology and Information, said the project should combine a professionally grounded model with practical use in schools.
