The National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting has warned of flash floods and landslides in the northern mountainous provinces of Dien Bien, Lai Chau, Lao Cai and Tuyen Quang as rain is forecast to continue for the next six hours.

From 7:30am to 12:30pm on Monday, the four provinces are expected to receive more rain. Accumulated rainfall will generally range from 20mm to 50mm and exceed 80mm in some areas.

Some parts of Tuyen Quang Province could receive more than 120mm.

Flash floods are possible along small rivers and streams, while landslides may occur on steep slopes in several communes and wards. The warning names Bản Bo, Bình Lư, Mường Ảng, Mường Lạn, Bắc Hà, Bản Liền, Hồ Thầu and Tân Quang among the affected areas.

The risk level for flash floods, landslides and land subsidence caused by heavy rain or water flows has been rated Level 1.

Under Decision No. 18/2021, Level 1 natural disaster risk is represented by light blue and classified as low risk.

Flash floods and landslides could cause serious environmental damage and threaten people's lives.

They may also disrupt local traffic, impede vehicle movement and damage residential and economic infrastructure, causing losses to production and socio-economic activities.

The hydro-meteorological agency advised local authorities to inspect areas where waterways may be blocked and identify vulnerable locations in their jurisdictions so they can prepare preventive and emergency response measures.
