Hanoi (VNA) reported that Vietnam’s automotive market could approach 700,000 sales in 2026, after nearly 500,000 vehicles were sold in the first nine months. Data from VAMA, Thanh Cong Group and VinFast showed 495,138 vehicles sold in January–September, up 20.2% year on year. September sales reached 62,590, up 29% from August and 28% year on year.

Electric vehicles drive growth

VinFast delivered 23,624 electric cars in September and 177,697 in January–September, exceeding its full-year 2025 result of 175,099. VAMA members sold 2,168 hybrids in September and 16,057 in the first nine months, up 64% year on year. More electrified models are expected by year-end.

Competition in the fourth quarter

Automakers and dealers are expected to continue incentives, while new models could intensify competition in SUV and crossover segments. Buyers will also consider range, fuel consumption, maintenance, safety, charging and after-sales service.

Opportunities and challenges for the auto industry

Growth could create opportunities for local production and foreign investment, while increasing pressure on roads, charging stations and energy supply. Regulators will need standards for electricity-load management and charging-station safety. Competition may push manufacturers to update models, control running costs and improve after-sales services.
