On November 3, Haiphong police said that at about 2:30 p.m. on October 30, a 75-year-old man identified as T.Q.Q., from Do Thuong hamlet in Nguyen Luong Bang Commune, went to a jewelry shop in Tung Lam hamlet in the same commune to sell 1.1 cay of gold.

Before that, an unknown caller had told the man that he was connected to the police and that his bank account was linked to a fraud ring.

The caller ordered him to go to the Ministry of Public Security headquarters for questioning. The caller also threatened that if he did not transfer money to «verify and clear the related information», he would be prosecuted, arrested and sent to prison.

The shop owner, 50-year-old T.T.H. from Tung Lam hamlet, noticed that the man appeared worried and kept talking on the phone. She suspected that he was being targeted by a scam.

She quickly contacted the local police officer and Nguyen Luong Bang Commune Police to report the incident.

Police officers arrived soon afterward, explained the scammers' method and helped the man recognize the fraud.

The shop owner's vigilance and the police's timely intervention stopped the man from selling the gold and transferring the money to the scammers.

After the incident, the man sent a letter of thanks to Nguyen Luong Bang Commune Police and the jewelry shop owner for their timely help in protecting his property.
