Vietnam begins construction of VND2.199 trillion Tra Khuc 1 Bridge

Quang Ngai began construction of the new Tra Khuc 1 Bridge on October 8. The VND2.199 trillion project will replace the existing bridge, which has been in service for more than 60 years.

The project is located between Nghia Lo Ward to the south and Truong Quang Trong Ward to the north. It will be about 830 metres long, including a 577-metre bridge that is 28 metres wide, with four motor-vehicle lanes, two mixed-use lanes, sidewalks and a viewing platform.

Three large steel rings will run across the river and evoke the water wheels once used to lift water from the river to local fields. The rings are also part of a self-anchored suspension structure being designed and built in Vietnam for the first time.

The bridge will have four self-anchored suspension spans. Its main cables will transfer their tension back to the bridge girder rather than to external anchor blocks. The structure will be shifted about 11 degrees east of the existing bridge to preserve a heritage banyan tree on the northern side.

The southern end will connect with the Quang Trung, Ba Trieu and Hai Ba Trung roundabout area and include an underpass on Ton Duc Thang Street. The northern end will link to Tran Van Tra, Hoang Sa, Nguyen Van Linh and an extension of Te Hanh Street.

Quang Ngai Chairman Nguyen Duc Tam said the new bridge had long been awaited by local residents. He said more than VND2 trillion in public investment would be disbursed over the next 18 months.

The existing bridge has been in service for more than 60 years. Some sections are damaged and expose rusting steel, creating safety risks during the rainy and flood season. The new bridge will be the eighth crossing of the Tra Khuc River.
