On October 15, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam and President To Lam spoke at the 70th anniversary ceremony of Hanoi University of Science and Technology. He said university knowledge must deliver practical value for the country rather than remain only in projects and research publications.
Pursuing meaningful goals
To Lam stressed the importance of basic science and systems thinking. He said Hanoi University of Science and Technology should become an outstanding research university capable of handling major national tasks, training talented specialists and leading technological development through science and practice.
“I hope Hanoi University of Science and Technology will become a place where scientists and experts from across the country can find opportunities to carry out meaningful work and contribute together to Vietnam’s development,” To Lam said.
He urged the university to apply its knowledge in practice and ensure businesses use it. “It cannot remain in books or projects, and it cannot be limited to publications. We must create products,” the Party and state leader said.
Forecasting strategic technology challenges for the next 10 years
To Lam also focused on scientific integrity. He repeatedly mentioned academic honesty and scientific ethics. The sixth of the six tasks he assigned to the university was to preserve scientific ethics and academic honesty, which he described as a matter of vital importance.
“The university must preserve scientific ethics and academic honesty and foster care in every design and every calculation. Behind every technical product are the safety of people, structures and the living environment,” To Lam said.

To reach the goal of entering the top 100 universities in Asia by 2035, Hanoi University of Science and Technology must build its education and research quality, academic reputation and contribution to the country, To Lam said.
He praised the university for completing its Innovation Center in a short time and instructed the center and the university to forecast changes in strategic technologies over the next 10 years.
To Lam noted that Vietnam is currently focusing on 10 strategic fields, or core technologies, but the world is changing rapidly through science and technology, digital transformation and artificial intelligence. He instructed the university and the center to identify, research, propose and apply new solutions early.
