Heavy rain fell across central and outlying areas of Ho Chi Minh City at midday on October 21. On Ho Hoc Lam Street in An Lac, an area known as one of the city’s flood spots, black water covered the road after the rain and receded slowly. Residents found it difficult to travel and work in the flooded area.
The water rose to the sidewalk, making it difficult for pedestrians to tell the road from the pavement as they crossed the flooded section.
High water and heavy traffic on Ho Hoc Lam Street created waves that splashed against both sides of the road.
Delivery riders struggled to cross the flooded section. Street vendors also had few customers as the heavy midday rain left the road flooded into the afternoon.
One delivery rider said he had to use the road because he had an order to deliver. His motorbike stopped after he crossed the flooded section, and he had to restart it.
The Southern Regional Hydrometeorological Station said strong disturbances in the upper-level easterly wind zone had caused thunderstorms in the area. The storm system was expected to produce 5 to 20 mm of rain on October 21, with local amounts above 25 mm.
The rainy season is nearing its end, while average temperatures are rising and contrasting weather patterns are making conditions unstable. Localized heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning and strong gusts were therefore possible. Vietnam’s National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting also said Ho Chi Minh City could see showers and thunderstorms on October 21 and 22, with locally heavy rain and strong gusts. Residents were advised to take care during thunderstorms.
