Police in Quang Ninh City found about 300 tonnes of industrial waste that had been illegally transported and buried at several sites in Thong Nhat Commune. The city police investigation agency opened a case against two suspects for environmental pollution.
On October 18, Quang Ninh City Police said its economic police division had clarified a case involving the illegal dumping and burial of about 300 tonnes of industrial waste in Thong Nhat Commune.
The city police investigation agency opened a case against two suspects for environmental pollution.
Investigators said 41-year-old Tran Van Trung, who lives in Ha Lam Ward, Quang Ninh, was one of the people who organized the transport and illegal dumping of industrial waste from production facilities outside the province to Quang Ninh.
Authorities previously caught Trung illegally dumping more than 20 tonnes of waste in Thong Nhat Commune.
As the investigation expanded, police found that Trung had rented a warehouse covering about 1,000 square meters in the Bac Cau Bang urban area project in Thong Nhat Commune to store aluminum slag.
From there, Trung arranged for the waste to be transported by dump trucks to different locations. He then hired excavators to level and bury it in an effort to conceal the violation. Investigators determined that the illegal dumping had taken place mainly at night since early April 2026.
When authorities excavated the Bac Cau Bang urban area project, they found about 40 tonnes of aluminum slag buried beneath several layers of soil. Some piles began smoking during the excavation and gave off a burnt smell.
According to investigators, Trung was paid about VND20 million for each shipment of around 20 tonnes of waste. He assigned several people to receive, unload, transport and bury the waste.
Lieutenant Colonel Pham Van Diep, deputy head of the Quang Ninh City Economic Police Division, said waste from aluminum production and casting must be collected and processed by authorized organizations.
However, to reduce processing costs, the suspects worked together to transport industrial waste to Quang Ninh for illegal dumping and burial.
Police have determined that the total amount of waste illegally dumped and buried in the case was about 300 tonnes. The investigation is continuing, and authorities are clarifying the responsibility of those involved.
