On October 14, the People's Council of Phu Tho held the fifth session of its 20th term, a thematic meeting that considered several issues, including personnel matters.
The council passed a resolution removing Nguyen Huy Ngoc as deputy chairman of the provincial People's Committee for the 2026–2031 term.
In September, the Ministry of Public Security's Economic Police Department charged Nguyen Huy Ngoc and ordered his detention on suspicion of receiving bribes. The case is related to Viet My Medical Investment JSC. Le Dinh Thanh Son, director of Phu Tho General Hospital, was detained in the same case.
The specific violations by the two accused have not been disclosed. Investigators said the former officials had received large bribes.
According to preliminary investigation findings, Bui Chan Phuong, former chairman of the board of Viet My Medical Investment JSC, established three companies in Vietnam, five in Singapore and three in Hong Kong, China.
Phuong and his accomplices bought and resold medical equipment and pharmaceutical drugs at inflated prices, then imported them into Vietnam and sold them to medical facilities at very high prices.
Many officials who led units of the Ministry of Health and local authorities have been charged with receiving bribes in the case. They include Tran Van Thuan, who was a deputy minister of health when he was detained.
Thuan and Ngoc were later expelled from the Communist Party for violating party rules and state laws while carrying out their duties, as well as regulations on preventing corruption, waste and misconduct.
They were also found to have violated rules on conduct prohibited for party members and requirements to set a personal example. The disciplinary statement said the violations had caused very serious consequences, public anger and serious damage to the reputation of the party organizations, local authorities and agencies where they worked.
At a September meeting, the Central Steering Committee for Preventing and Combating Corruption, Waste and Negative Practices agreed to place the case under its monitoring and direction.
