Nghi Son Refinery supplies 5.6 million tonnes of fuel in eight months

Nghi Son Refinery processed 53 million barrels of crude oil and supplied 5.6 million tonnes of petroleum products to Vietnam's domestic market in the first eight months of 2026, the company said at Media Connect 2026.

The refinery processed 53 million barrels of crude oil in the first eight months of the year. The crude distillation unit, or CDU, operated at an average 110.9% of design capacity. The comparable figures were 116.5% in 2025 and 113.5% in 2024.

About 23 million barrels of the processed crude was Kuwait Export Crude, or KEC. The refinery has a design capacity of about 10 million tonnes of crude oil a year, equivalent to roughly 200,000 barrels a day. NSRP meets about 35% to 40% of domestic fuel demand.

The company said it was diversifying its crude sources to reduce supply disruption risks and dependence on one feedstock. Since the beginning of the year, NSRP has imported and processed 10 crude oil types besides KEC. The refinery also processed about 345,000 tonnes of intermediate feedstock through its residue hydrotreating and residue fluid catalytic cracking units. After stabilizing its feedstock supply and meeting technical conditions, the CDU has operated above 120% of capacity since late May, the company said.

NSRP plans to import nearly 12.5 million tonnes of crude oil and supply about 9.2 million tonnes of petroleum products to the domestic market in 2026.

On September 1, the refinery received its 300th very large crude carrier, or VLCC. According to NSRP, from the start of commercial operations in late 2018 through August 2026, it processed about 78.5 million tonnes of crude oil and supplied 52.8 million tonnes of products to the domestic market. Its output has remained above 110% of design capacity for several consecutive years.

After arriving at Nghi Son port, crude oil goes through several processing stages. The refinery produces petrol, diesel, Jet A-1 aviation fuel and other petrochemical products. NSRP fuels are used in freight transport, aviation, industry and households, while its petrochemical products are used as inputs for packaging, household goods, components and textile fibres. Nghi Son Refinery was established in 2008 in Thanh Hoa province. It is a joint venture between Petrovietnam, Kuwait Petroleum Europe, Idemitsu Kosan and Mitsui Chemicals. The investment exceeds US$9 billion.
