Vietnam’s National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting has warned of heavy rain in central Vietnam from the evening of October 27 through October 29. Rain is expected to ease from around the night of October 29.
An east-shifted cold air mass is weakening and is combining with an upper-level easterly disturbance moving toward central Vietnam, according to the center. Scattered thunderstorms and locally heavy rain have already been reported from Thanh Hoa to Da Nang, as well as in eastern parts of Quang Ngai, Dak Lak and Khanh Hoa. Rainfall is generally forecast at 10 to 30 mm, with some areas receiving more than 60 mm, and the storms may continue for two to three days.
The center is paying particular attention to Ha Tinh, Quang Tri, Hue and Da Nang. These areas are expected to receive the heaviest rain where the cold air and upper-level disturbance converge. Total rainfall is forecast at 60 to 130 mm, with some places receiving more than 250 mm.
The weather center warned that the rain could cause flooding in low-lying areas, urban districts and industrial zones. Local authorities should also be prepared for flash floods in small rivers and streams, as well as landslides on slopes in mountainous areas.
