Residents and tourists swimming at Nha Trang beach in Khanh Hoa province found several spiny marine animals washed ashore by the waves on October 4.

The animals were about half the size of a rambutan, white with brown stripes and covered in hard spines that looked like fishing line.

Nguyen Thanh Son, chairman of Nha Trang Ward, said the animals were sand dollars. They can cause itching and pain if someone steps on them.

The appearance of sand dollars in Nha Trang waters is not new. The city also recorded them in 2014 and 2019.

After receiving the report, Nha Trang Ward worked with the Nha Trang Bay Management Board to clear and destroy the sand dollars that had washed ashore, to protect residents and tourists using the beach.

Authorities advised anyone who steps on a sand dollar and develops unusual symptoms to visit a medical facility for examination and treatment.
