On October 12, information appeared on social media saying that Microsoft had carried out mass layoffs in Vietnam.

A user who identified themselves as a Microsoft employee said they had received an invitation to a meeting with company leaders and the human resources department titled “Important business update.” The user said the meeting was about layoffs.

Speaking to Dân trí, a Microsoft spokesperson said: “At Microsoft, we continuously adjust the way we work and organize our teams to support future priorities. These changes are implemented in different forms across the company and in some cases include difficult decisions affecting jobs.”

The company therefore confirmed the layoffs.

“We are committed to supporting affected employees through the transition with care and respect,” the Microsoft spokesperson said.

A Microsoft representative also confirmed that the company would maintain its commitments in the Vietnamese market.

Microsoft has not disclosed how many employees or which positions were affected by the decision.

Microsoft entered the Vietnamese market in 1996. It was also one of the few US technology companies to build an in-country research and development team. A representative of Microsoft Vietnam said the company established an R&D engineering team at its offices in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City in 2024. Vietnam was the fourth market in Asia where Microsoft had such a unit.
