On the afternoon of October 4, the Lao Cai–Cam Duong area forest management unit was planting trees at Soi Tien islet under a planned project.
The group of eight people used a boat to carry trees from the bank to Soi Tien islet, which lies in the middle of the Red River. The trees were being gathered there for planting over the following days.
After 2 p.m., the boat returned toward the right bank of the Red River, near the pedestrian street in Lao Cai Ward. It sank while approaching the bank, causing one forest ranger to fall into the river and go missing.
Authorities began searching after receiving the report. By evening, police, Lao Cai Ward militia and the first waterway police team of the Lao Cai provincial traffic police searched both banks of the Red River and the area around the sinking. They used a specialized speedboat, a metal boat, poles and nets.
The missing ranger had not been found by 9 p.m. The search was continuing.
