The Ho Chi Minh City traffic police department recently said it was increasing the use of surveillance cameras, as well as specialized technical equipment, to detect, record and process violations of road order and safety.
According to the traffic police, wider image-based enforcement is one way to prevent road accidents in advance. It is expected to help reduce accidents across all three measures: the number of crashes, deaths and injuries.
The traffic police expect image-based enforcement to improve road users' compliance and gradually build a more orderly and safe traffic culture.
How to check a camera fine in VNeTraffic by vehicle number
As camera enforcement expands, the Ho Chi Minh City traffic police department recommends that residents check vehicle information themselves and take the required steps after receiving a traffic violation notice.
One option is VNeTraffic, an app from the Ministry of Public Security. It allows users to check camera-fine information by vehicle number on a phone.
According to instructions from the Nam Sai Gon traffic police team, which belongs to the Ho Chi Minh City traffic police department, the check works as follows:
1. Download and install VNeTraffic if it is not already on your phone.
2. Sign in to VNeTraffic with an electronic identification account on VNeID.
3. On the home page, select "Camera fine check."
4. Choose the vehicle type, enter its number and tap "Check."
5. View the result on the screen.
If a violation is found, the app may show the vehicle number, vehicle type, time and place of the violation, the violation category, processing status and the unit that detected it.
If no camera-fine information is found for the number being checked, the app will display a corresponding notice.
VNeTraffic also lets users check administrative penalty decisions for violations.
After signing in through VNeID, open "Violations and penalties," select "Check penalty decision" and view the result.
If a penalty decision exists, the app will show the related information. If there is none, the screen will say that no administrative penalty decision is available yet.
Violations cameras commonly record
The Ho Chi Minh City traffic police department said surveillance cameras and specialized technical equipment allow the authorities to detect and record common traffic violations.
They include running a red light, driving against traffic, using the wrong side or lane of the road and exceeding the posted speed limit.
Cameras can also record a motorcycle or moped driver or passenger riding without a helmet, along with some other traffic violations. The images may be used to handle the case under the rules.
The traffic police department said some road users still follow the rules only when they see police officers working on the road.
Traffic rules should be followed at all times, regardless of whether police officers are present at the location.
Wider image-based enforcement is also intended to improve compliance: a violation can be detected and processed even when police officers are not directly working at that particular location.
