The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction has separated container trucks and heavy trucks from motorcycles and cars on Vo Chi Cong Street, from Phu My Bridge to the My Thuy Interchange. The measure is intended to improve traffic safety.
The department announced the change on October 29 at a regular press briefing on socio-economic issues. The new arrangement separates heavy trucks, container trucks and other vehicles on the section from Phu My Bridge to the My Thuy Interchange.
The left lane next to the median is for trucks weighing more than 5 tonnes and tractor-trailers.
The lane to its right is for cars, buses and trucks weighing up to 5 tonnes. The far-right lane is for two-wheeled and three-wheeled vehicles, cars and buses carrying up to 16 passengers.
From 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following day, all cars may use the two leftmost lanes.
The Department of Construction said separating heavy trucks and container trucks from cars should improve traffic safety. The arrangement also helps cars move more easily during congestion caused by heavy trucks and container trucks entering and leaving Cat Lai Port.
Phu My Bridge repairs complicate traffic in the area
Repairs to the expansion joints on Phu My Bridge began on October 28. During the work, Da Phuoc Traffic Police from the Ho Chi Minh City Police and the contractor are regulating and directing traffic in the area.
Under the traffic plan for the bridge repairs, cars carrying fewer than nine people and trucks with a payload of no more than 2.5 tonnes are assigned alternative routes depending on their destination and travel time.

Cars carrying fewer than nine people can use the Saigon River Tunnel, Calmette Bridge, Ong Lanh Bridge, Tan Thuan 2 Bridge or Kenh Te Bridge, depending on their route.
For trucks with a payload of no more than 2.5 tonnes, the plan provides alternative routes via Mai Chi Tho Street, Vo Nguyen Giap Street, National Highway 1, Vo Chi Cong Street and connecting roads from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
At the same time, construction of an interchange continues at the My Thuy roundabout, alongside the Phu My Bridge repairs. The two projects have made traffic in the area more complicated.
The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction said it would continue working with the Ho Chi Minh City Police to monitor traffic on Vo Chi Cong Street and nearby roads, then adjust the lane arrangement as needed.
