More than 95% of the land for the Ho Chi Minh City - Thu Dau Mot - Chon Thanh expressway section through the former Binh Duong area has been handed over, with work under way at 25 sites. At a press briefing on October 29, the Ho Chi Minh City Transport Management Board reported that the project is intended to improve links between Ho Chi Minh City, the Southeast region and the Central Highlands provinces.

More than 95% of the land has been handed over

The project requires about 332.92 hectares of land, affecting 1,655 cases, including 37 graves. Land has been handed over for 1,399 cases, or 84.53%. By area, about 317.52 hectares have been handed over to the investor, equal to 95.37% of the total required. The board said some cases still require compensation collection, demolition, relocation of assets and actual land handover.

The board is working with departments, agencies, local authorities, compensation organizations and the project company to resolve outstanding cases. Compensation and resettlement work is also being accelerated. The remaining land is targeted for handover in November 2026.

Disconnected sites and material shortages affect progress

The approximately 45.65-kilometre new section is being built under a public-private partnership using a BOT contract. By the end of October 2026, contractors had mobilized 25 construction teams. Work includes removing organic soil, building service roads, placing K95 and K98 embankments, constructing drainage systems, residential underpasses and bored piles, and preparing bridges.

Construction progress remains below expectations because some handed-over sites are disconnected. The difficulties affect bridges, interchanges, access roads and areas with existing infrastructure. The availability and prices of fill soil and construction stone also affect the work. The project company is adding workers, machinery and equipment, prioritizing critical sections and speeding up utility relocation.

Project scale and schedule

Construction began in February 2025 and is scheduled for completion in June 2028. Construction under the BOT contract costs VND 8.833 trillion. The first phase will have four full lanes, a continuous emergency stopping lane, a 25.5-metre roadbed and a maximum design speed of 100 kilometres per hour. Land clearance is being carried out once according to the planned six-lane scale.

The route will include 21 bridges, 5 overpasses, 14 residential underpasses and 6 major interchanges. The Ho Chi Minh City section will have 4 interchanges with Ring Roads 3 and 4 and provincial roads. The section in Dong Nai city, formerly Binh Phuoc province, will have 2 interchanges with the planned Gia Nghia - Chon Thanh expressway, Ho Chi Minh Road and National Highway 14.
