Several areas of Hanoi have intensified forced demolition and clearance of illegal structures after warnings of lax oversight and possible protection of violations. The cases involve land use, construction rules and fire safety.
Nearly 10,000 illegal facilities and structures remain in Hanoi
The Thanh Liet Ward People's Committee began forced clearance in the Go Gu field area of Trieu Khuc. The first phase covers 20 households and nearly 1,700 square meters, with two excavators deployed. Ward chairman Bui Huy Hoang said the action enforces city directives on land, construction and fire safety violations.
About 572 structures along Vu Duc Uy Street violate rules on agricultural and public land. Files have been opened for 220 cases, while 352 have not been documented. Most are used as warehouses, businesses or homes, and all appeared before July 1, 2025. The ward aims to deal with all 572 structures in 2026, including 167 houses and more than 400 sheet-metal workshops.

In Soc Son Commune, authorities identified violations in forest areas in Duoc Thuong, Cong Hoa and Ve Linh villages. In Thuong Tin Commune, a review found 557 workshops and temporary structures on agricultural and public land. By October 27, 250 families and individuals had requested power cuts, while 25 structures had been dismantled. Remaining violations will be forcibly cleared by March 2027.
Hanoi police statistics showed nearly 10,000 violating facilities and structures at the end of August. Of these, 2,469 had been ordered to suspend operations for fire safety violations.

Full review and enforcement targeted before the second quarter of 2027
The Standing Committee of the Hanoi Party Committee called for action against structures, workshops and warehouses that violate land or construction rules or fail to meet fire safety requirements. It said some cases showed lax oversight, a lack of responsibility and signs of covering up or protecting violations.
Authorities must conduct a citywide review, identify responsibility and deadlines, and deal with violations before the second quarter of 2027. Follow-up inspections must prevent paper-only decisions, repeated violations and new cases. The Hanoi People's Committee set a completion date of June 15, 2027, with monthly reports due by the 15th.
