Construction of seven bridges spanning the Red River in Hanoi is being accelerated, with technical openings planned for July and full completion targeted for October, ahead of the 2027 APEC Summit.
Work on the Tu Lien Bridge began on May 19, 2025. Contractors are focusing on the main bridge, its approach bridge, and the Truong Sa and Nghi Tam interchanges.
Ngo Ngoc Van, director of the Hanoi Traffic Construction Investment Project Management Board, said the project had recorded more than VND2 trillion in construction output out of a contract value of VND9.418 trillion, excluding contingency costs. That equals 21.72 per cent of the contract value.
The Ngoc Hoi Bridge and approach roads project began on August 19, 2025. It has total investment of nearly VND10.2 trillion and is about 7.5km long, including 5.2km in Hanoi and 2.3km in Hung Yen Province. Construction output has reached 23.59 per cent of the contract value, excluding contingency costs.
Contractors Thai Binh Duong and VNVC E&C have completed the two main bridge towers and all 80 bored piles. They are now building pile caps for the main bridge piers.
Contractors Trung Chinh, Deo Ca, Licogi 18, Thanh Huy and Delta have mobilised 18 construction teams to prepare a beam casting yard and access roads and to drill bored piles for the approach bridges.
The Tran Hung Dao Bridge project has recorded VND2.6 trillion in construction output out of a total value of VND7.2 trillion, or 36.96 per cent. The main bridge section is scheduled to complete 70 per cent of its pier shafts this month, while work on steel structures for several main spans will be accelerated.
The Thuong Cat Bridge has total investment of more than VND7.3 trillion, with construction output at about 17.08 per cent. The Hong Ha Bridge is being built by 30 construction teams and has reached about 49.35 per cent. Construction output on the Van Phuc Bridge is 31.62 per cent.
The Me So Bridge, part of Component Project 3 of the Hanoi Capital Region Ring Road No. 4, has reached about 46.95 per cent. Contractors are building the main bridge piers and approach roads and aim to complete the bridge in October 2027.
Construction hurdles
The projects still face difficulties involving the relocation of technical infrastructure and the storage of excavated soil. Underground and above-ground facilities, as well as graves that have not yet been relocated, are among the obstacles.
Heavy rain and rising water levels in the Red River have also complicated work on the main bridge pile caps and approach sections near the riverbank.
The Hanoi Transport Construction Investment Project Management Board has asked local authorities to speed up site clearance, relocate medium-voltage power lines and graves, hand over cleared land, complete dyke-related construction permits, and adjust work plans to weather conditions while protecting dykes and flood drainage.
The simultaneous launch of large construction projects in Hanoi and neighbouring provinces has also caused local shortages of construction materials and labour, pushing up costs.
