Hanoi parking fees rise as residents move cars out of the city center

Hanoi introduced new parking fees on October 15. In the central area, hourly parking for cars with up to nine seats rose from VND 30,000 to VND 50,000, while one round-the-clock monthly contract increased to VND 6 million.

From October 15, Hanoi has applied new parking-service rates to locations where roadsides and sidewalks funded by the state budget are temporarily used for parking. The change has increased car-related costs for residents in the city’s central urban area.

Nguyen Hoang Long said he previously paid VND 4 million a month for round-the-clock parking, a price he already considered high. After the fee rose to VND 6 million, he decided to move his car to another part of the city.

Long found a space in an apartment building’s underground parking garage in Minh Khai. The monthly fee there is VND 1.5 million, but he has to travel by motorbike whenever he parks or collects the car. He also bought a monthly motorbike parking ticket for VND 200,000. His total cost is now VND 1.7 million a month, VND 4.3 million less than before.

The distance from Long’s home on Tran Hung Dao Street to Minh Khai is nearly 6km. He said the trips take time, particularly during rush hour, but reduce the financial burden on his family.

Ngo Duy Phuong is also planning to move his car but has not found a suitable place. He drives to work every day and previously paid VND 2 million a month for overnight parking on Quan Su Street. The new rates have raised the fee to VND 3.5 million.

Phuong said some overnight parking lots within a 2km radius of his home charge about VND 2.5–3 million a month, but they no longer have available spaces.

In the central urban area, the hourly fee for cars with up to nine seats and trucks weighing under 2 tonnes rose from VND 30,000 to VND 50,000. On other roads inside Ring Road 1, the one-time parking fee increased from VND 25,000 to VND 45,000.

Monthly daytime parking contracts now cost VND 3.8 million, day-and-night contracts cost VND 5 million, and overnight contracts cost VND 3 million.
