Vietnam's National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man and a high-ranking Vietnamese delegation arrived at Beijing Capital International Airport at noon on Sunday local time. During the official visit, Man will co-chair the second session of the cooperation committee between the Vietnamese National Assembly and China's National People's Congress.

The visit was made at the invitation of Zhao Leji, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress.

Wang Dongming, a member of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, welcomed the delegation at the airport together with Song Rui, deputy secretary-general of the NPC Standing Committee; Pham Thanh Binh, Vietnam's ambassador to China; officials and staff of the Vietnamese Embassy; and members of the Vietnamese community in China.

Vietnam-China relations have continued to develop, particularly after reciprocal visits by To Lam, general secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee and president of Vietnam, and Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and president of China. Political trust has deepened, and the two sides have established new cooperation mechanisms.

Defence and security cooperation has become more substantive. Trade, investment and tourism ties, as well as infrastructure connectivity, have expanded, including through new opportunities for railway links.

Vietnam-China economic and infrastructure links

China is Vietnam's largest trading partner, while Vietnam is China's largest trading partner in ASEAN and its fourth-largest trading partner worldwide by country. Bilateral trade reached US$256.4 billion in 2025, up 24.8 per cent year on year. It reached US$216.1 billion in the first eight months of 2026, up 35.2 per cent from a year earlier. Local-level cooperation, people-to-people exchanges and coordination at multilateral forums have also expanded.

Bilateral parliamentary cooperation has grown stronger and produced practical results. High-level exchanges and contacts between the two legislatures are held regularly.

Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Minh Vu said the trip was Man's first visit to China in his current position.

He said the visit was an important diplomatic event. It would continue implementing the foreign policy set out at the 14th National Party Congress, consolidate and develop Vietnam-China relations, and improve the effectiveness of parliamentary cooperation as a major area of the two countries' comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership.

Established in 2024, the cooperation committee mechanism is the highest-level form of inter-parliamentary cooperation the two sides have established with a limited number of other countries. The session gives the two legislative bodies an opportunity to exchange views, turn strategic orientations into concrete measures, strengthen coordination, improve the legal framework for bilateral cooperation, and monitor the implementation of mutual understandings and agreements reached at various levels.

Vu expressed confidence that the visit would deliver practical results as bilateral relations continue to develop positively. VNS
