Pham Anh Tuan, chairman of the Gia Lai People's Committee, ordered the urgent relocation of residents from the Mount Mot area in Quy Nhon, where landslides pose a risk. He also called for a plan to handle the area as a whole while making effective use of its land.
On October 30, the Gia Lai People's Committee Office said Pham Anh Tuan had issued conclusions after an October 18 meeting with five wards in the Quy Nhon area. The conclusions emphasized the need to protect residents around Mount Mot.
Under the conclusions, the Quy Nhon People's Committee must immediately review homes in the landslide-risk area and organize the relocation of residents whose safety cannot be ensured. The local authority must inspect current conditions, review each case, classify them and submit a suitable proposal to the Department of Construction.
The Department of Construction was assigned to work with the Quy Nhon People's Committee and other agencies to propose a planning and overall handling plan for Mount Mot, taking into account the effective use of the land.
The provincial Agriculture and Rural Development Project Management Board must coordinate with relevant agencies to review and prepare a proposal for an investment project and report it to the provincial People's Committee.
Thanh Niên previously reported that Mount Mot in Quy Nhon posed a landslide risk that threatened residents' safety. A report by the Quy Nhon People's Committee said 228 households live in the area: 183 on the mountain and its slopes, and 45 at the foot of the mountain. In residential group 19, many households have lived there for years. Local authorities said some residents bought land through handwritten agreements, while others occupied land and built houses without authorization.
Because of the landslide risk, the Quy Nhon People's Committee proposed relocating residents and cutting down and leveling Mount Mot. Preliminary calculations put the volume of soil and rock to be removed at up to about 1 million cubic meters. The estimated investment is about VND 500 billion, while revenue from a land auction is estimated at about VND 850 billion.
Pham Anh Tuan said the proposal to level Mount Mot was still under consideration. The authorities must continue studying it, collect opinions from relevant agencies and seek the opinion of the Standing Committee of the provincial Party Committee before making a decision.

In addition, the Quy Nhon People's Committee was told to strengthen oversight of land use and construction and take firm action against land encroachment and illegal construction, especially around the foot of Ba Hoa Mountain.
The local authority must also work with the Department of Construction and other agencies to study ways to improve and upgrade parks along the coast and Xuan Dieu Street. It must speed up compensation, land clearance and resettlement for the Dong Da traffic intersection improvement project and complete procedures for projects in area A1 of the North Ha Thanh River Urban and Commercial Zone.
