The family of a 22-year-old teacher who died in a traffic accident in Gia Lai agreed to donate her heart, liver and kidneys for transplantation. It is the province's first organ recovery from a donor, Thanh Niên reported.
At noon on October 15, the body of Pham Thi Anh Thu was taken to the operating room at Hung Vuong Gia Lai Hospital for organ recovery. Thu, 22, lived in Dak Po commune in Gia Lai Province and taught English in Trang commune.
Thu had earlier been involved in a traffic accident on National Highway 19 in An Phu Ward. She was taken to hospital for emergency treatment but died from severe injuries.
After medical staff explained that she could not be saved following brain death and discussed the benefits of donating tissues and organs, Thu's parents filed a voluntary application to donate their daughter's organs.
In their application to Hung Vuong Gia Lai Hospital, the family said they wanted to help people with serious illnesses and support medical development. They said the decision was voluntary, without any demand for money or complaints and lawsuits against the hospital or individuals involved in organ recovery and transplantation. The family also allowed the hospital to use images and information about the donation for the public interest.
According to the hospital, the organs expected to be donated are the heart, liver and kidneys. Thu's lungs were severely damaged in the accident and could not be recovered for transplantation. The organs will be transplanted into patients who need them.

Organ recovery began at noon on October 15. Hung Vuong Gia Lai Hospital will receive the organs and carry out the required medical procedures. This is the first donor organ recovery in Gia Lai.
Specialists and medical staff from Military Central Hospital 108, Military Hospital 103, Viet Duc Hospital, Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, and Hung Vuong Gia Lai Hospital are taking part in the work.
