On October 14, the Ca Mau provincial police investigation agency opened a case and detained Hua Van Chon. He is being investigated for producing and selling counterfeit fertilizer. Chon lives in Phong Hiep commune, Ca Mau province.
Police had earlier caught Chon directing the production of counterfeit fertilizer in a prefabricated building at a company in Phong Hiep commune.
Authorities seized more than 100 bags of fertilizer, about 5.3 tonnes, that were ready to be sent to buyers. They also found thousands of bags of raw materials and packaging printed with the names of different fertilizer brands.
During searches of several fertilizer dealers who bought products from Chon, police seized more than 190 bags of counterfeit fertilizer.
According to the initial investigation, Chon directly ran two companies. Neither met the conditions required for production, but he organized the manufacture of fertilizer from materials of unknown origin and poor quality. Counterfeit packaging and labels were used to sell the products.
Police initially determined that Chon had been producing counterfeit fertilizer since 2023. They said he had sold a large quantity on the market and made illegal profits worth several billion Vietnamese dong.
