What is a Vietnam e-Visa?
An e-Visa is an electronic entry document issued by Vietnam's immigration authority after an online application. Since 15 August 2023, it has been available to citizens of all countries and territories, with a validity of up to 90 days. Choose multiple entry if your route includes leaving Vietnam and returning; for one continuous stay, single entry is usually enough.
What to prepare before applying
- Your passport and the exact spelling of your name, passport number, and date of birth.
- A digital portrait photo on a neutral background.
- A clear scan or photo of the passport information page.
- Your intended entry date and requested visa period.
- Your first accommodation address in Vietnam.
- Your intended international port of entry.
Complete the form in Latin characters and do not 'correct' or alter the spelling of your name yourself. After submission, save the application code because it is used to check the status.
Single-entry or multiple-entry?
| Type | Best for | Important |
|---|---|---|
| Single entry | One entry into Vietnam | Once you leave Vietnam, that visa cannot be used again even if its validity period has not ended. |
| Multiple entry | Vietnam → another country → Vietnam | Useful for wider Southeast Asia trips or temporary trips home during the visa validity period. |
How to choose the dates
The visa is valid during the dates printed on the document; it is not automatically '90 days from arrival'. Do not set the start date after your actual flight date, and avoid making the final visa day the same day as a critical outbound connection. If your plans are flexible, leave some buffer within the maximum allowed period.
Ports of entry
The e-Visa is valid only at approved international checkpoints, and the list can change. Before booking an uncommon route, check the latest airport, land-border, and seaport list on the official portal.
Common mistakes
- A typo in the passport number or name.
- Glare, cropping, or poor quality on the passport image.
- Using a casual selfie instead of an appropriate portrait photo.
- Choosing the wrong single/multiple-entry option.
- Setting the visa start date later than the flight date.
- Buying non-refundable tickets before visa approval when you are not eligible for visa-free entry.
After approval
Download the e-Visa and check the name, passport number, entry type, and validity dates carefully. Keep an offline copy. A printed copy is also useful because an airline or border officer may ask to see the document when you do not have reliable internet access.
