Internet in Vietnam: Mobile Data and Home Internet

For most travellers, getting online in Vietnam is simple: a local SIM or eSIM usually solves the problem in a day. For stays of a month or more, home internet becomes relevant, and then the quality of the line in your specific building, the router, and the contract matter more than headline data allowances. There is no single 'best internet in Vietnam' for every situation.

For a short trip

If you are travelling for one to three weeks, a separate home internet contract is rarely necessary. Hotels and apartments usually provide Wi‑Fi, while a local SIM or eSIM covers maps, ride-hailing, messaging, and backup connectivity.

For a month or longer

For longer rentals, first check what is already installed. In serviced apartments, internet is often included. In a standard apartment or house, you may need a separate contract or to take over an existing line. The exact setup depends on the provider and the landlord.

Mobile data as a backup

If you work remotely, keep an active mobile data plan even at home. It helps during local outages, router failures, or temporary line problems. If video calls are critical, test hotspot performance and real signal quality inside the apartment before relying on it.

Major providers

Large fixed-line providers include Viettel, VNPT, and FPT. Choose based on availability in your building, last-mile quality, and support rather than the highest advertised speed alone.

What to test in the apartment

  • Run a speed test at the actual workspace.
  • Check whether the router supports 5 GHz or 6 GHz.
  • See if Ethernet is available.
  • Check where the router sits relative to the bedroom or office.
  • Confirm who contacts support if the line fails.
  • Make sure your mobile operator has usable indoor signal as backup.

Questions and answers

Is internet in Vietnam good?

Check the connection where you will actually work. Ask the host which provider serves the accommodation, run a speed test at your desk in the evening, and test mobile coverage as a backup.

Do I need home internet for a one-month stay?

Not necessarily. If your accommodation already has reliable Wi‑Fi, a separate line is usually unnecessary.

Which internet provider is best?

There is no universal winner. Compare availability and performance in your specific building.

What should I do during an outage?

Use a mobile hotspot and contact the provider or landlord according to the setup of the connection.
