New or used: what to compare
| Option | What it offers | Check before paying |
|---|---|---|
| New from a dealer | Clearer purchase record and dealer support | Invoice, registration package and plate issue date |
| Used from an owner | Potentially lower price | Seller's ownership, matching frame and engine numbers, transfer process |
| Used from a shop | The shop may help inspect or transfer the bike | Who is the legal seller and who is responsible for the papers |
Four checks before you pay
- Ask for the original vehicle registration certificate. A photo alone is not enough to confirm the transfer can be completed.
- Compare the frame and engine numbers on the bike with the certificate. Stop if they differ or are unreadable.
- Check the seller's name against their identity document and ask how they acquired the bike if names do not match.
- Write down the price, handover date, included documents and who will submit the ownership-change application.
Vietnam's vehicle registration rules use the registered owner's information. The seller and buyer should complete the required transfer procedure with the competent registration office. A shop's promise to 'handle the Blue Card' is not proof that the registration has changed. Keep the transfer receipt and follow up for the updated certificate.
What a Blue Card means
Blue Card is a common informal name for the vehicle registration certificate. It identifies the registered vehicle and owner. It is not a driving licence, insurance policy or proof that the current holder may legally ride. Check the original document and registration status before buying.
Can you ride with a Russian licence?
Purchase and permission to ride are separate questions. A Russian national licence by itself does not automatically authorize motorcycle riding in Vietnam. Before renting or buying, check whether your licence and international driving permit are recognized for the exact vehicle class. If the paperwork does not cover that class, do not ride; insurance may also refuse a claim after an unlicensed crash.
When renting is simpler
If you will stay for a short trip, compare the total purchase cost with a rental that includes valid registration and maintenance. For a longer stay, buy only after confirming you can complete the ownership transfer and legally ride the chosen engine class.
Questions and answers
What is a Blue Card?
It is the common name for a vehicle registration certificate. It is not a driving licence.
Can a foreigner register a motorbike?
The registration office checks the applicant's documents and local procedure. Ask that office or the dealer to confirm the required papers before paying.
Do the plates change after a sale?
Do not assume either way. Confirm the transfer and plate requirements with the registration office for that vehicle.
Does buying a bike make my Russian licence valid?
No. Purchase does not change licence rules. Your driving document must cover the motorcycle class under Vietnam's rules.
What should I check first?
Original registration, seller identity, matching frame and engine numbers, and the written transfer plan.
