Vietnam in 10 Days: A Practical Itinerary

In ten days, do not try to squeeze in Hanoi, Ha Long, Hue, Hoi An, Nha Trang, Ho Chi Minh City, and Phu Quoc. A strong first-time itinerary is north plus central Vietnam: Hanoi, Ninh Binh, and the Da Nang-Hoi An combination. You get a major city, nature, history, food, and the sea while needing only one long domestic flight.

Days 1-3: Hanoi

Do not overload the first day: check in, explore the Old Quarter, walk around Hoan Kiem Lake, eat, and recover from the flight. Use the second day for a deeper city experience: a museum or historic site, neighbourhoods around the centre, coffee, and evening food. On day three, add a quieter district or a day trip if you have enough energy.

Days 4-5: Ninh Binh

The trip from Hanoi takes a reasonable part of the day, and the region deserves at least one overnight stay. Choose one boat area, one viewpoint or walking route, and do not try to visit every temple at once. Staying overnight in Ninh Binh or Tam Coc lets you experience the area without the main daytime crowds coming from Hanoi.

Day 6: Fly to Da Nang

Return toward Hanoi airport with a buffer and fly to Da Nang. Do not schedule a fixed tour for that evening. After check-in, a walk or dinner is enough. If you prefer to stay in Hoi An, you can transfer directly there, but Da Nang is the easier transport base.

Days 7-9: Da Nang and Hoi An

Use one day for Da Nang and the coast, one for Hoi An, and keep another flexible for what matters more to you: Hue, My Son, a quiet beach day, or simply a no-transfer day. You do not need to sleep in both Da Nang and Hoi An on a short trip; changing hotels can cancel out the benefit.

Day 10: Buffer and departure

Your final day should protect the international ticket. If you fly home from Da Nang, the itinerary ends cleanly. If the international flight leaves from Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, reach that city earlier rather than building a tight chain of two flights.

Why Ho Chi Minh City is not included

You can add Ho Chi Minh City, but then you introduce a second major flight and another hotel change. In a ten-day trip, that starts to feel like an airport tour. Southern Vietnam works better as a separate trip or as a replacement for the north/centre if the megacity and Mekong interest you more.

Questions and answers

Can I see Vietnam properly in 10 days?

You can see several strong regions, but not explore the whole country in depth.

How many domestic flights should I take?

One major domestic flight is usually enough for a comfortable ten-day itinerary.

Do I need Ha Long Bay?

You can replace Ninh Binh with a bay experience, but doing both plus central Vietnam makes the trip denser.

Where should I finish the itinerary?

Ideally in the city with your convenient international departure or a safe onward connection.
