Public Holidays in Vietnam

For travellers, public holidays in Vietnam matter less as a list of dates and more because of transport demand and the opening hours of banks and government offices. Tet is the biggest period, but long holiday breaks can also form around 30 April-1 May and National Day on 2 September.

Main statutory public holidays

Why long weekends change from year to year

When a statutory holiday coincides with a weekly rest day, compensation rules can create additional days off. The government or employer also sets the concrete arrangement around Tet and National Day. The actual length of a holiday block therefore varies by year.

Transport impact

Domestic tourism increases during long holidays. Tet, the 30 April-1 May period, and National Day are particularly busy. Intercity tickets, domestic flights, and accommodation in popular destinations are better booked early.

Banks and administration

Government offices and banks follow official holiday schedules. If you need to handle immigration, banking, or another administrative task, avoid leaving it until the final working day before a long break.

Shops and restaurants

On ordinary public holidays, commercial life in major cities can continue almost normally. Tet has a stronger effect: family-run businesses may close for several days, while large chains often operate on reduced schedules.

2027 holiday schedule

The Government set the 2027 holiday period for public employees from 2 to 10 February for Tet and from 2 to 5 September for National Day. Private companies choose a schedule under the Labour Code and announce it to employees separately.
