Trains in Vietnam: Routes and Tickets

Choose a train in Vietnam not because it is always cheaper than flying, but when the railway fits your route well. On the central coast, the scenery can make the journey part of the trip; on an overnight service, a sleeper can replace a hotel night. For a very long Hanoi-Ho Chi Minh City leg, flying usually saves much more time unless you specifically want the rail experience.

Where to buy tickets

The most direct option is the official Vietnam Railways ticketing system at dsvn.vn and related VeTau pages. Vietnam Railways' own booking instructions state that online passengers must enter their name and identification details; for a foreign passenger, that means passport information. The railway also provides an official e-ticket verification service.

Passport and name on the ticket

Vietnam Railways warns that the passenger's document details must match the e-ticket. Do not use a random shortened name or the number of another document. For foreign travellers, the safest approach is to enter details exactly as shown in the passport.

When the train is especially worthwhile

  • Hue-Da Nang and other central-coast sections where the scenery is part of the trip.
  • An overnight leg if you can sleep reasonably well in transit.
  • A route without a convenient direct flight.
  • A journey where the train itself is part of the experience rather than lost time.

When flying makes more sense

If the cities are more than a thousand kilometres apart and your holiday is short, a domestic flight often saves an entire day. Do not compare only 'train time' with 'flight time': airports also require transfers and check-in, but the difference on a long route can still be substantial.

Food, air conditioning and baggage

On a long journey, bring water, a light snack, and an extra layer because air conditioning can feel cold at night. Baggage usually stays with you in the carriage, so keep valuables close and do not block the aisle.

Questions and answers

What is the official Vietnam train website?

Vietnam Railways ticket sales and ticket verification are available through dsvn.vn and related official VeTau pages.

Do foreigners need a passport to book?

For online booking, foreign passengers enter passport details, and the ticket should match the document used for travel.

Is a 4-berth or 6-berth sleeper better?

A 4-berth cabin is usually roomier and quieter; a 6-berth cabin is cheaper.

Should I take the train from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City?

If the journey itself interests you and you have time, yes. If you simply need to move between the cities quickly, flying is much more practical.
