How to Pay in Vietnam as a Tourist

Vietnam is neither a purely cash economy nor a place where cards solve everything. In malls and chain restaurants, card payments are common; in small cafés, markets, parking, and local services, cash or domestic bank QR transfers may be easier. Travellers should use a hybrid setup rather than depend on a single wallet.

Where cash is still easier

  • Street cafés and small family-run businesses.
  • Markets and small purchases.
  • Parking and some local services.
  • Small stores outside major tourist areas.
  • Situations where a terminal or internet connection is temporarily unavailable.

Where cards are usually practical

Supermarkets, shopping malls, hotels, modern cafés, restaurants, and larger services are more likely to accept international cards. Still, keep a backup: a terminal may reject a particular card, your bank may request extra verification, and Russian-issued Visa/Mastercard cards do not function as normal international cards.

What is VietQR?

In many places, instead of a card terminal you will see a QR code with bank details. For locals this is a quick transfer from a Vietnamese banking app. For visitors, it is important to understand that this is not automatically 'Apple Pay for everyone'. Whether you can pay depends on your bank, app, and compatibility with the specific QR scheme.

Check the amount and the zeros

Vietnamese dong uses large numbers, and newcomers can misread them. Before paying, compare the amount on the terminal with the receipt or menu. Pay particular attention to 100,000 versus 1,000,000 VND and to any amount manually typed into a terminal.

If the terminal offers your home currency

Some terminals offer to charge the purchase in your account currency instead of VND. This is dynamic currency conversion. Do not choose the familiar currency automatically: compare the rate and conditions first. Paying in VND and leaving conversion to your bank or card network is often more transparent.

A practical everyday setup

  1. Do not keep your entire travel budget as cash in one place.
  2. Carry a small amount of VND for the day.
  3. Use a working foreign-issued card if you have one.
  4. Keep emergency money separately.
  5. For large purchases, ask in advance which payment methods and fees apply.

VietQR without a local bank account

Traditional VietQR requires a supported banking or payment app. Visitors without a local account should use cash or an international card where accepted. Before paying by QR, check the recipient, amount and final debit.

An international card as a back-up

An international card can be useful at chain stores, hotels, apps and for overseas subscriptions. Altyn Wallet is one option for people who need to fund a card from Russia. Do not rely on one card alone; keep some VND in cash and a second independent way to pay.

Questions and answers

Is it better to use cash or card in Vietnam?

Use both. Cash is still important for everyday spending, while cards are convenient at larger businesses.

Can I pay with my phone?

Contactless payment works at some terminals, but it depends on your card and mobile wallet.

What is the QR code shown in cafés?

It is often a bank transfer to local account details rather than a universal payment method for foreign cards.

Should I carry a lot of cash?

No. Carry a reasonable daily reserve and keep larger sums or backups separately.
