Money in Vietnam: Currency, Cards and Exchange

Keep some cash in Vietnamese dong and have a working non-cash payment method. Cards, ATMs and QR payments follow different rules, so check which options you can use before travelling.

If you are visiting for a week

A simple setup is enough: some convertible cash for exchange, a working foreign-issued card, and a small emergency reserve kept separately. Get enough VND after arrival for initial expenses, then use a combination of cash and card.

If you are staying for several months

Longer stays add recurring transfers, rent, local QR payments, and possibly a Vietnamese bank account. Account-opening rules for foreigners depend on the bank and your immigration status, so this is a separate task rather than something everyone needs to do in the first few days.

Emergency money

A backup is useful not because Vietnam is unusually difficult, but because any single financial channel can temporarily fail: a card is blocked, an ATM declines, an app requires an SMS, or an exchange counter is closed. Two independent channels greatly reduce everyday stress.

A practical payment plan

  1. Keep some cash in VND for small purchases and as a reserve.
  2. Have a working international card for hotels, chain shops and overseas services.
  3. For local QR payments, check which VietQR app or service is available to you.
  4. If your main funds are in a Russian bank, check in advance how you can convert rubles to VND.
  5. Do not keep the entire trip budget in one bank, card or wallet.

Separate guides cover EXFM for online currency exchange, Altyn Wallet as an international-card option, and VietQR through a local banking app.
