Grab in Vietnam: How to Use It

Grab is one of the easiest ways to get around major Vietnamese cities: you see the fare before booking, the route stays in the app, and you can set the destination on a map instead of explaining an address by voice. GrabBike is often useful for short solo trips, while GrabCar or taxi services are better for luggage and groups.

Which Grab services are available

Service availability depends on the city, but the core logic is consistent: GrabCar is a car ride booked through the platform, GrabBike is a passenger ride on a motorbike, and GrabTaxi connects you with a conventional taxi through the app. Some cities also offer additional formats, including hourly car rental with a driver.

ServiceBest forLimitations
GrabBikeShort solo trips and heavy trafficNot suitable for large luggage; a helmet is required
GrabCarAirport trips, suitcases, two or three passengersMore expensive than a motorbike and more affected by traffic
GrabTaxiWhen a licensed conventional taxi is more convenientFare model can differ from GrabCar's fixed-price model
RentMultiple stops or a car with driver for several hoursNot available in every city

How to book your first ride

  1. Allow location access, but check the pickup point manually.
  2. Enter the destination and choose the appropriate vehicle type.
  3. Review the price and conditions before confirming.
  4. After a driver is assigned, match the car or motorbike plate and driver name.
  5. If the pickup point is complicated, send a short message through the app chat.

The most common problem is a wrong pickup point

One Vietnamese address can correspond to a large complex with several gates, while malls and airports often have dedicated ride-hailing areas. If the driver appears to be circling nearby, the issue is often that you are on different sides of the building. Use the map and landmarks rather than relying only on the address line.

Grab at the airport

At airports, app-based pickup may be permitted only in designated zones. After booking, follow the in-app instructions and local signage. Do not automatically get into a car because someone inside the terminal says they are 'your Grab'; match the driver and vehicle details in the app.

Payment

Available payment methods depend on your account, card, and service. Grab in Vietnam supports both cash and cashless scenarios. If your foreign card cannot be added, keep cash available and do not build your transport plan around one payment method only.

GrabBike safety

  • Wear the helmet provided by the driver.
  • Do not hold your phone out toward the road edge.
  • Get on and off from the safer side relative to traffic.
  • If the riding style feels unsafe, end the trip in a safe place and book another ride.
