Russian-issued Visa and Mastercard
Visa and Mastercard officially suspended international network support for cards issued by Russian banks in March 2022. A Visa or Mastercard logo on a Russian-issued card therefore does not mean the card will work in Vietnam.
What about MIR?
Vietnam has some infrastructure that accepts MIR, but coverage is far smaller than Visa or Mastercard acceptance. Vietnam-Russia Joint Venture Bank (VRB) explicitly lists MIR among accepted cards for its POS acquiring service. That confirms real support exists, but it does not mean every shop, ATM, or city will accept the card.
Practical alternatives
- Bring convertible cash and exchange it for VND at a bank or authorised exchange agent.
- Use a foreign-issued bank card that legally works internationally.
- Combine card and cash so one failed channel does not leave you without money.
- For a long stay, consider a local bank account if you meet the bank's and legal requirements.
Why local QR payments do not automatically solve the problem
Bank QR payments are extremely common in Vietnam, especially in small cafés and shops. In many cases, however, the QR code is simply a transfer to a Vietnamese bank account rather than a universal card payment. A foreign traveller without compatible Vietnamese banking access should not assume any VietQR can be paid from a Russian banking app.
What to bring
- A modest reserve of foreign cash.
- At least two independent ways to access money.
- Your bank's contact details and a way to access the banking app if your Russian SIM is unavailable.
- A plan for getting VND after arrival.
- A one- or two-day emergency reserve kept separately from your main wallet.
Keep an international card as a separate back-up
If Russian-issued Visa and Mastercard cards are unavailable abroad, a separate international card can be one option. For example, Altyn Wallet offers an international card that can be funded from Russia. Before travelling, confirm which card was issued, check conversion rates and fees, and make a small test payment. A card in an app is not guaranteed to work at every merchant.
