Buses in Vietnam: How to Travel Between Cities

Intercity buses in Vietnam are useful on routes where flying is too expensive or unnecessary and the railway does not go where you need. But the word 'bus' covers very different formats: regular seated buses, sleeper buses with reclined berths, cabin buses, and smaller limousine vans. Choose by pickup point, real journey time, and operator reviews as well as price.

Types of buses

FormatBest forWhat to know
Seat busShort and medium routesStandard seated coach
Sleeper busOvernight and long-distance routesReclined berth; passenger height and space matter
Cabin busLong trips with more privacyUsually more expensive than a standard sleeper
Limousine vanRoughly 3-6 hour trips and small groupsFewer seats; pickup in the city is often more convenient

Where to buy tickets

You can book directly with the operator, at a bus station, or through an aggregator. Vexere is one of Vietnam's largest platforms: its current site lists thousands of bus operators and more than 5,000 routes, together with departure times, pickup points, vehicle types, and reviews. For a foreign traveller, that is often easier than searching dozens of local websites.

How to choose an operator

  1. Read recent reviews for the specific route, not only the operator's overall score.
  2. Check pickup and drop-off points on the map.
  3. Compare the stated total journey time, not just the departure time.
  4. Read baggage rules.
  5. If sleep matters, look at photos of the exact cabin or berth type.

Sleeper buses: what to expect

A classic sleeper berth is not a full-size bed. It is an individual reclined space designed around local vehicle dimensions, and taller passengers may find it tight. Cabin buses are often roomier, but the word 'VIP' guarantees very little on its own: check photos and the seat layout.

Boarding

Arrive early. Some companies collect passengers at a city office and shuttle them to the actual coach; others depart directly from a terminal. If you are waiting at the wrong place, a Vietnamese phone call five minutes before departure may not save the trip. Save the address and instructions in advance.

Night bus or daytime bus?

An overnight bus can save a hotel night and daytime hours, but not everyone sleeps well on one. On your first sleeper trip, do not schedule an important tour with a fixed early-morning start: buses can arrive earlier or later than expected and sleep quality is unpredictable.
