ATMs in Vietnam: Fees and Withdrawal Limits

Withdrawing cash in Vietnam is usually straightforward if your card works internationally. The complication is that one withdrawal can include a fee from the Vietnamese ATM owner, a fee from your own bank, and currency conversion. Choose an ATM by the final amount and the conditions shown before confirmation, not by the logo alone.

What makes up the cost of a withdrawal

  1. The Vietnamese ATM owner's fee.
  2. A fee charged by the bank that issued your card.
  3. Conversion from VND into your account currency.
  4. An extra conversion layer if the ATM offers to charge you directly in RUB, USD, EUR, or another home currency.

The same ATM can apply different fees to different cards, and your own bank may charge separately. Check both fee schedules before withdrawing cash.

What to choose when the ATM offers currency conversion

If the ATM lets you choose between a VND charge and an amount already converted into your card's currency, compare the rate carefully. This is dynamic currency conversion. It can feel convenient because the number is familiar, but the ATM's exchange rate can be worse than your bank or card network's rate. If the offered conversion is poor and your card allows it, choose to be charged in VND.

Why one ATM works and another does not

  • The bank does not support your card network or card type.
  • The machine has run out of suitable banknotes.
  • You have exceeded a daily or per-transaction card limit.
  • Your own bank blocks the withdrawal as suspicious.
  • The requested amount is above that ATM's single-withdrawal limit.

If your account was charged but no cash came out

  1. If the ATM is attached to a bank branch, do not leave immediately.
  2. Photograph the ATM, its number/address, and any error screen.
  3. Save the SMS or transaction record in your banking app.
  4. Contact both your issuing bank and the bank that owns the ATM.
  5. Do not repeat the same withdrawal several times until you know whether the first request was reversed.

How to reduce ATM costs

  • Compare two or three banks during your first days and remember which option works well.
  • Withdraw a larger amount when the fee is fixed and your limits allow it.
  • Prefer ATMs at bank branches over isolated machines in questionable locations.
  • Avoid poor dynamic-currency-conversion offers.
  • Check your own bank's overseas cash-withdrawal fees before the trip.

Published bank fee schedules show that costs vary by card and transaction. Vietcombank updated fees for international debit cards and ATM transactions in 2026. Check your bank’s current schedule before travelling.

Questions and answers

Can I withdraw US dollars from an ATM in Vietnam?

For normal tourist use, expect ATMs to dispense VND. Do not rely on foreign-currency cash withdrawal.

Why does the ATM offer to charge me in my home currency?

That is dynamic currency conversion. Compare the offered rate and do not accept it automatically.

Are there fee-free ATMs?

Conditions vary by bank and card. Check the fee shown by the specific ATM before confirming.

What if the ATM keeps my card?

Stay at the machine, call the support number displayed on it, and contact staff immediately if it is located at a bank branch.
